Today's reading: These chapters begin with a beautiful promise of God's blessing on His people and end with a vision of hope.
Memory gem: "Ask ye of the Lord rain in the time of the latter rain; so the Lord shall make bright clouds, and give them showers of rain, to every one grass in the field" (Zechariah 10:1).
Thought for today:
Is it God's promise and design that His Spirit shall be poured out in abundant measure upon the proclamation of this everlasting gospel--poured out as the latter rain. Too often we lack the power of the Holy Spirit in our preaching because we do not ask, we do not pray for it. Listen to the words of the divine promise:
"For I will pour water upon him that is thirsty, and floods upon the dry ground: I will pour my spirit upon thy seed, and my blessing upon thine offspring: and they shall spring up as among the grass, as willows by the water courses" (Isaiah 44:3, 4).
I appeal especially to gospel ministers, church elders and officers of all grades, and to believers everywhere: "Ask, and ye shall receive" (John 16:24). Is it not time to preach the Word, to preach Christ with power--to be loyal to Him, loyal to His Book, loyal to His truth, and loyal to His cross? So may we claim the outpouring of the Holy Spirit in abundance, far exceeding Pentecostal days. Its power is needed to change human hearts, to bring a new life, to bring peace to hearts now at war with themselves. Shall we not seek that power today?
We cannot work for Christ without the Holy Spirit. His promised representative. Christ Himself is gone, but the Holy Spirit is here. Let us pray for the rain--the latter rain--and then go to work, expecting our prayers to be answered and God's promises fulfilled.
