Then shall thy light break forth as the morning, and thine health shall spring forth speedily: and thy righteousness shall go before thee; and the glory of the Lord shall be thy rereward. Isa. 58:8.
Daniel and his three companions refused to be defiled with the delicacies from the king's table. They knew that what they ate and how they lived had a definite affect on spiritual life. Seventh-day Adventists have believed that for a long time. We believe that our bodies are the temples of God (1 Cor. 3:16, 17) and that God wants us to use our bodies and our spirits to glorify Him (chap. 6:19, 20).
When it comes to health and healing, we have the eight simple, natural remedies. They are not only remedies but also preventatives. "There are many ways of practicing the healing art; but there is only one way that Heaven approves. God's remedies are the simple agencies of nature....Pure air, sunlight, abstemiousness [temperance], rest, exercise, proper diet, the use of water, trust in divine power--these are the true remedies."--Councils on Diet and Foods, p. 301. These are both the means to recovery and the means to prevent becoming sick.
Have you ever taken a few minutes to check how you are doing in these eight areas? Usually, if there are health problems, there are difficulties in one of these eight areas, if not in several of them. You might want to try checking yourself sometimes. And there is a spiritual counterpart for these remedies as well. Jesus is the "Sun of righteousness." We are invited to drink of the water of life. Jesus has given us the Sabbath for rest, and has invited us to come to Him for rest every day. Prayer is the breath of the soul. Exercise is the Christian witness. The proper diet is to eat the bread of life. These are the ingredients for a healthy spiritual life, as well as for a healthy physical life.
Four of these eight remedies, in the spiritual realm, are the cause, and four are the result. Pure air, prayer; proper diet, God's Word; water, the Holy Spirit and the water of life; and exercise, witness; all have to do with the relationship with God, and are the cause of a healthy Christian experience. And the result of these are the other four: temperance, rest, the sunlight of God's presence shed abroad, and trust in divine power.
