The basis for this promise is found in the verse preceding: "I will look unto the Lord; I will wait for the God of my salvation: my God will hear me." It is when we have faith in God, trustingly wait for the fulfillment of His promises, and seek Him earnestly in prayer that we can be sure of rising when we fall and finding light in dark places. "Nothing is apparently more helpless, yet really more invincible, than the soul that feels its nothingness and relies wholly on the merits of the Savior. By prayer, by the study of His Word, by faith in His abiding presence, the weakest of human beings may live in contact with the living Christ, and He will hold them by a hand that will never let go. These precious words every soul that abides in Christ may make his own" (The Ministry of Healing, p. 182).
In Psalm 112:4 we read, "Unto the upright there ariseth light in the darkness." We may find ourselves in some dark dungeon experience, but however dark it may be, the Lord will be our light.
When one of the Reformers had acquitted himself in public disputation as a credit to his Master's cause, a friend asked to see the notes he had been observed to write, supposing that he had taken down the arguments of his opponent and sketched the substance of his own reply. The friend was surprised to find that the notes consisted of this petition: "More light, Lord! More light, Lord!"
The Lord is my light; then why should I fear?
By day and by night His presence is near;
He is my salvation from sorrow and sin;
This blessed persuasion the Spirit brings in.
