In a stricter sense the Ten commandments, and, in a wider sense, all the Word of God, are the true basis of soul peace.
When, on one of his voyages, Columbus came to the mouth of the Orinoco River, one of his sailors said they had found an island. The explorer replied, "No such river as that flows from an island. That mighty torrent must drain a continent."
So it is with the law of God. It came from no finite source. It sprang from the depths of infinite wisdom, love, and grace; and its sources are inexhaustible. It brings help for all our needs. Through the Word of God the Holy Spirit acts as Comforter.
Those who love the law of the Lord will not be lifted up by prosperity or cast down by adversity. Their faith in God's Word will dispel all objections. Even when they meet some great mystery of faith, they will not say, "This is an hard saying; who can hear it?" (John 6:60), as did some of old time, but they will accept the Holy Word without question. They will never take offense at the Lord's ways, because they love the Lord's Word.
a Japanese student endeavoring to describe one of his friends to an American said, pointing to a Bible lying nearby, "He believes this Book very much!" Could our friends describe us in that way?
"The law of the Lord is perfect, converting the soul: the testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple" (Ps. 19:7).
My blest Redeemer and my Lord,
I read my duty in Thy Word;
But in Ty life the law appears,
Drawn out in living characters.
