REMEMBER JERUSALEM

Jesus went out and departed from the temple, and His disciples came up to show Him the buildings of the temple.  And Jesus said to them, "Do you not see all these things?  Assuredly, I say to you, not one stone shall be left here upon another, that shall not be thrown down."--Matthew 24:1-2

The time is not far distant, when, like the early disciples, we shall be forced to seek refuge in desolate places.  As the siege of Jerusalem by the Roman armies was the signal for flight to the Judean Christians, so the assumption of power on the part of our nation in the decree enforcing the papal sabbath will be a warning to us.  It will then be time to leave the large cities, preparatory to leaving the smaller ones for retired homes in secluded placed among the mountains. (Testimonies for the Church 5, 464-465)

Conscientious obedience to the word of God will be treated as rebellion.  Blinded by Satan, the parent will exercise harshness and severity toward the believing child; the master or mistress will oppress the commandment-keeping servant.  Affection will be alienated; children will be disinherited and driven from home.  The words of Paul will be literally fulfilled: "All that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution." 2 Timothy 3:12.

As the defenders of truth refuse to honor the Sunday-sabbath, some of them will be thrust into prison, some will be exiled, some will be treated as slaves.  To human wisdom all this now seems impossible; but as the restraining Spirit of God shall be withdrawn from men, and they shall be under the control of Satan, who hates the divine precepts, there will be strange developments.  The heart can be very cruel when God's fear and love are removed. (The Great Controversy, 608)

REFLECTION:  The ruin of Jerusalem was a symbol of the final ruin that shall overwhelm the world.  The prophecies that received a partial fulfillment in the overthrow of Jerusalem have a more direct application to the last days.  We are now standing on the threshold of great and solemn events.  A crisis is before us, such as the world has never witnessed. (Thoughts from the Mount of Blessing, 120)
