The apostle Paul is describing the spiritual equipment of the Christian warrior. Then, "above all," or over all the other armaments, he says, take "the shield of faith."
We know that our adversary is always seeking to destroy us, so we are to be sober and vigilant, and to resist him. "Whom resist steadfast in the faith" (1 Peter 5:9). The shield of faith is absolutely necessary to this resistance. "This is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith" (1 John 5:4). In overcoming the world, we overcome the prince of this world (verse 18).
Martin Luther said, "The only faith which makes a Christian is that which casts itself on God for life or death." How shall we get this shield of faith? Where shall we find it? Listen to the Word of God: "So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God" (Rom. 10:17). Let us open the door of Holy Scripture, and there we shall find the shield hanging on the wall.
Dwight L. Moody once said: "I suppose if all the times I have prayed for faith were put together, it would amount to months. I thought that someday faith would come down and strike me like lightening. But faith did not seem to come. One day I read in the tenth chapter of Romans, 'Faith cometh by hearing, and hearing, and hearing by the word of God.' I had closed my Bible and prayed for faith. I now opened my Bible and began to study, and faith has been growing ever since." We are not only to pray for faith but to seek for it in the Holy Scriptures.
Our enemy is likely to attack at any time, so let us not forget the shield.
MEDITATION PRAYER: "Thou hast also given me the shield of thy salvation" (Ps. 18:35).
