SATAN USES ALL HIS DEVICES

Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour.--1 Peter 5:8

Satan is now using every device in this sealing time to keep the minds of God's people from the present truth and to cause them to waver.  I saw a covering that God was drawing over His people to protect them in the time of trouble; and every soul that was decided on the truth and was pure in heart was to be covered with the covering of the Almighty.

Satan knew this, and he was at work in mighty power to keep the minds of as many people as he possibly could wavering and unsettled on the truth.  I saw that the mysterious knocking in New York and other places was the power of Satan, and that such things would be more and more common, clothed in a religious garb so as to lull the deceived to greater security and to draw the minds of God's people, if possible, to those things and cause them to doubt the teachings and power of the Holy Ghost.

I saw that Satan was working through agents in a number of ways.  He was at work through ministers who have rejected the truth and are given over to strong delusions to believe a lie that they might be damned.  While they were preaching or praying, some would fall prostrate and helpless, not by the power of the Holy Ghost, but by the power of Satan breathed upon these agents, and through them to the people.

While preaching, praying, or conversing, some professed Adventists who had rejected present truth used mesmerism to gain adherents, and the people would rejoice in this influence, for they thought it was the Holy Ghost.  Some even that used it were so far in the darkness and deception of the devil that they thought it was the power of God, given them to exercise.  They had made God altogether such a one as themselves and had valued His power as a thing of nought. (Early Writings, 43-44)

REFLECTION:  The temptations of Satan are greater now than ever before, for he knew that his time is short and that very soon every case will be decided, either for life or for death....The Lord has shown me that His grace is sufficient for all our trials; and although they are greater than ever before, yet if we trust wholly in God, we can overcome every temptation and through His grace come off victorious. (Early Writings, 46)

ANGELS AND MAN COLLABORATE

The law of truth was in his mouth, and injustice was not found on his lips.  He walked with Me in peace and equity, and turned many away from iniquity.--Malachi 2:6

A far greater work will be done than has been done, and none of the glory of it will flow to men, for angels that minister to those who shall be heirs of salvation are working night and day.  All who will be saved must co-operate with the agencies of heaven to arouse the inhabitants of the earth to the solemn truths for this time....

The third angel's message means far more than we take it to mean.  We should search to find out all that is possible concerning this solemn message.  The earth is to be lightened with its glory.  The angels of God will even now go through our land to arouse the minds of the people if we will cooperate with them; but sad indeed is the fact that we are far behind.  The providences of God, and the work that ought to be done to send the rays of truth to those who sit in darkness, is undone.

Divine agencies will go before those who go out to work for God.  Many are ready to investigate the truth, for angels of God have prepared their hearts for its reception.  Publications should be issued, written in the plainest, simplest language, explaining the subjects of vital interest and making known the things that are to come upon the world.

The condition of the earth demands that light should shine upon its darkness.  Will not the people to whom has been committed sacred responsibilities awake and put away every difference, every jealousy, every misunderstanding, and take hold of the work with determined energy. (Letter 1, October 12, 1875)

REFLECTION:  In the time of trouble just before the coming of Christ, the righteous will be preserved through the ministration of heavenly angels; but there will be no security for the transgressor of God's law.  Angels cannot then protect those who are disregarding one of the divine precepts. (Patriarchs and Prophets, 256)

PEACE AND SAFETY

When they say, "Peace and safety!" then sudden destruction comes upon them, as labor pains upon a pregnant woman.  And they shall not escape.--1 Thessalonians 5:3

In comparison to the number that reject the truth, those that receive it will be very small, but one soul is of more value than worlds beside.  We must not become discouraged although our work does not seem to bring large returns....

Although the greatest portion of the world will reject the truth, some will accept it, some will respond to the drawing power of Christ.  Those in whose hands the reading matter is placed may turn from the light and refuse to obey the convictions of conscience, but the messenger that they despise may fall into the hands of others through the providence of God, and be meat in due season to them.  They will be aroused to search the Scriptures, to pray to know what is truth, and they will not ask in vain.  Angels of God will minister to their necessities.

Many who are in harmony with the truth, whose hearts are full of peace and gladness because of the light for these last days, have received their knowledge from the pages that others rejected.  Those who are susceptible to the evidences of truth will yield to the convictions of the Spirit of God.  Like the noble Bereans they will search the Scriptures daily to see if these things are true, and they will be converted to God....

Some are inclined to think that too great a stir is being made, but in their position of ease they say to the people, "Peace and safety" when sudden destruction is about to fall upon the world. [1 Thessalonians 5:3.]  I tremble as I think of the words that have been spoken to me concerning those who do not act in accordance with the truth for this time.  Said my Guide, "Those who do not arouse will be passed by, and God will move upon men who will respond to His call, and carry His work forward and upward." (Letter 1, October 12, 1875)

REFLECTION:  There are in the world today many who close their eyes to the evidences that Christ has given to warn men of His coming.  They seek to quiet all apprehension, while at the same time the signs of the end are rapidly fulfilling, and the world is hastening to the time when the Son of man shall be revealed in the clouds of heaven.  Paul teaches that it is sinful to be indifferent to the signs which are to precede the second coming of Christ.  Those guilty of this neglect he calls children of the night and of darkness. (The Acts of the Apostles, 260)

WHAT MUST I DO?

Now when they heard this, they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, "Men and brethren, what shall we do?"--Acts 2:37

Men are demanded in these times who will not betray the truth, who will [not] yield to any guide but God.  The trumpet must give a certain sound, clear and sharp.  The sound of warning and alarm must be given.  God has a message designed to arouse the people, and words of solemn importance must be spoken in no hesitating manner.  The time of night must be sounded....

Clear and distinct the truth must come to the people in the Spirit and power of God that the church and the world may be aroused from their carnal slumbers.  Men must be led to inquire with solemn interest, "What shall I do to be saved?" [Acts 16:30.]  False, unfaithful shepherds are crying "Peace and safety" to soothe the consciences of those who need to be alarmed for their souls' sake.

The voice and pen of God's faithful servants must be employed, that those who are at ease may be aroused with the warning, "For when they shall cry, Peace and safety; then sudden destruction cometh upon them." [1 Thessalonians 5:3.]

You must not only be watching and waiting, but praying and working.  The third angel's message embraces more than the finite mind of man comprehends.  The earth is to be lightened with its glory.  The truth must be published far more extensively than it yet has been. (Letter 1, October 12, 1875)

REFLECTION:  How shall a man be just with God?  How shall the sinner be made righteous?  It is only through Christ that we can be brought into harmony with God, with holiness; but how are we to come to Christ?  Many are asking the same question as did the multitude on the Day of Pentecost, when, convicted of sin, they cried out, "What shall we do?"  The first word of Peter's answer was, "Repent." (Steps to Christ, 23)

GOD SEES THE HEART

Every way of a man is right in is own eyes, but the Lord weighs the hearts.--Proverbs 21:3

I saw that Satan was at work in these ways to distract, draw away, and deceive God's people just now in this sealing time.  I saw some who were not standing stiffly, their knees were trembling, their feet were sliding because they were not planted on the present truth, and the covering of Almighty God could not be drawn over them while they were thus trembling.  Satan was trying his every art to hold them where they were until the sealing was over, and the covering drawn over God's people, and they were left without protection in the time of slaughter.  God has begun to draw the covering over His people; therefore it will very soon be drawn over all those who are to have a shelter in the day of the Lord.

I saw that as God worked in power for His people, Satan would also work, and that the mysterious knocking, and signs and wonders of Satan and false reformations would increase and spread.  The reformations that were shown me were not reformations from error to truth; no, no; but from bad to worse, for those who professed a change of heart had only wrapped about them a religious garb which covered up the iniquity of a vile heart.  Some appeared to have been really converted so as to deceive God's people.  But if their hearts could be seen they would appear as black as ever. (Manuscript 1, March 24, 1849)

REFLECTION:  Through Jesus we may open our hearts to God as to one who knows and loves us.

In the secret place of prayer, where no eye but God's can see, no ear but His can hear, we may pour out our hidden desires and longings to the Father on infinite pity, and in the hush and silence of the soul that voice which never fails to answer the cry of human need will speak to our hearts. (Thoughts from the Mount of Blessing, 84)

CHOOSE CAREFULLY WHOM YOU WILL SERVE

You shall again discern between the righteous and the wicked, between one who serves God and one who does not serve Him.--Malachi 3:18

It is important to describe the horror and despair of those who have trampled upon God's holy requirements.  The Lord gave them His law; they might have compared their character with it and learned their defects while there was yet opportunity for repentance and reform; but in order to secure the favor of the world, they set aside its precepts and taught others to transgress.  They have endeavored to compel God's people to profane His Sabbath.

Now they are condemned by that law which they have despised.  With awful distinctness they see that they are without excuse.  They chose whom they would serve and worship.  "Then shall ye return, and discern between the righteous and the wicked, between him that serveth God and him that serveth Him not." Malachi 3:18.

The enemies of God's law, from the ministers down to the least among them, have a new conception of truth and duty.  Too late they see that the Sabbath of the fourth commandment is the seal of the living God.  Too late they see the true nature of their spurious Sabbath and the sandy foundation upon which they have been building.  They find that they have been fighting against God.

Religious teachers have led souls to perdition while professing to guide them to the gates of Paradise.  Not until the day of final accounts will it be known how great is the responsibility of men in holy office and how terrible are the results of their unfaithfulness.  Only in eternity can we rightly estimate the loss of a single soul.  Fearful will be the doom of him to whom God shall say: Depart, thou wicked servant. (The Great Controversy, 640)

REFLECTION:  Sinners who make a pretension of piety mingle for a time with the true followers of Christ, and the semblance of Christianity is calculated to deceive many; but in the harvest of the world there will be no likeness between good and evil.  Then those who have joined the church, but who have not joined Christ, will be manifest....

He will judge every man according to his words and his works.  Profession is as nothing in the scale.  It is character that decides destiny. (Christ Object Lessons, 74)

SWORDS OF STRAW

The Lord is my strength and my shield; my heart trusted in Him, and I am helped; therefore my heart greatly rejoices, and with my song I will praise Him.--Psalm 28:7

I was pointed back to faithful Noah.  When the rain descended and the flood came, Noah and his family had entered the ark, and God had shut them in.  Noah had faithfully warned the inhabitants of the antediluvian world, while they had mocked and derided him.  And as the waters descended upon the earth, and one after another was drowning, they beheld that ark, of which they had made so much sport, riding safely upon the waters, preserving the faithful Noah and His family.

So I saw that the people of God, who had faithfully warned the world of His coming wrath, would be delivered.  God would not suffer the wicked to destroy those who were expecting translation and who would not bow to the decree of the beast or receive his mark.  I saw that if the wicked were permitted to slay the saints, Satan and all his evil host, and all who hate God, would be gratified.

And oh, what a triumph it would be for his satanic majesty to have power, in the last closing struggle, over those who had so long waited to behold Him whom they loved!  Those who have mocked at the idea of the saints' going up will witness the care of God for His people and behold their glorious deliverance.

As the saints left the cities and villages, they were pursued by the wicked, who sought to slay them.  But the swords that were raised to kill God's people broke and fell as powerless as a straw.  Angels of God shielded the saints.  As they cried day and night for deliverance, their cry came up before the Lord. (Early Writings, 284-285)

REFLECTION:  Says the psalmist: "In the time of trouble He shall hide me in His pavilion: In the secret of His tabernacle shall He hide me." Psalm 27:5.  Christ has spoken: "Come, My people, enter thou into thy chambers, and shut thy doors about thee: hide thyself as it were for a little moment, until the indignation be overpast.  For, behold, the Lord cometh out of His place to punish the inhabitants of the earth for their iniquity." Isaiah 26: 20, 21.  Glorious will be the deliverance of those who have patiently waited for His coming and whose names are written in the book of life. (The Great Controversy, 634)

FEARFUL HOUR

If we are afflicted, it is for your consolation and salvation, which is effective for enduring the same sufferings which we also suffer.  Or if we are comforted, it is for your consolation and salvation.  And our hope for you is steadfast, because we know that as you are partakers of the sufferings, so also you will partake of the consolation.--2 Corinthians 1:6-7

Soon I saw the saints suffering great mental anguish.  They seemed to be surrounded by the wicked inhabitants of the earth.  Every appearance was against them.  Some began to fear that God had at last left them to perish by the hand of the wicked.  But if their eyes could have been opened, they would have seen themselves surrounded by angels of God.

Next came the multitude of the angry wicked, and next a mass of evil angels, hurrying on the wicked to slay the saints.  But before they could approach God's people, the wicked must first pass this company of mighty, holy angels.  This was impossible.  The angels of God were causing them to recede and also causing the evil angels who were pressing around them to fall back.

It was an hour of fearful, terrible agony to the saints.  Day and night they cried unto God for deliverance.  To outward appearance, there was no possibility of their escape.  The wicked had already begun to triumph, crying out, "Why doesn't your God deliver you out of our hands?  Why don't you go up and save your lives?"  But the saints heeded them not.  Like Jacob, they were wrestling with God.

The angels longed to deliver them, but they must wait a little longer; the people of God must drink of the cup and be baptized with the baptism.  The angels, faithful to their trust, continued their watch.  God would not suffer His name to be reproached among the heathen.  The time had nearly come when He was to manifest His mighty power and gloriously deliver His saints.  For His name's glory He would deliver every one of those who had patiently waited for Him and whose names were written in the book. (Early Writings, 283)

REFLECTION:  You are obtaining a valuable experience.  May the Lord lead you step by step forward and upward.  If, under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, you obtain an experience for yourself in the Christian life, that experience will be of more value to you than gold or silver or precious stones; for such an experience will be to you an education which you may take with you into the future life. (Letter 264, December 7, 1903)

SEEK AND YE SHALL NOT FIND

With their flocks and herds they shall go to seek the Lord, but they will not find Him; He has withdrawn Himself from them.--Hosea 5:6

Those who had not prized God's word were hurrying to and fro.  They wandered from sea to sea, and from the north to the east, to seek the word of the Lord.  Said the angel, "They shall not find it.  There is a famine in the land; not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but for hearing the words of the Lord.  What would they not give for one word of approval from God? but no, they must hunger and thirst on.  Day after day have they slighted salvation, and prized earthly pleasure, and earthly riches, higher than any heavenly inducement and treasure.  They have rejected Jesus, and despised his saints.  The filthy must remain filthy forever."

Many of the wicked were greatly enraged as they suffered the effects of the plagues.  It was a scene of fearful agony.  Parents were bitterly reproaching their children, and children their parents, brothers their sisters, and sisters their brothers.  Loud, wailing cries were heard in every direction, "It was you who kept me from receiving the truth which would have saved me from this awful hour."

The people turned upon their ministers with bitter hate and reproached them, saying, "You have not warned us.  You told us that all the world was to be converted, and cried, Peace, peace, to quiet every fear that was aroused.  You have not told us of the hour; and those who warned us of it you declared to be fanatics and evil men, who would ruin us."  But I saw that the ministers did not escape the wrath of God.  Their suffering was tenfold greater than that of their people. (Early Writings, 281-282)

REFLECTION:  Those who have despised God's Word, those who have lightly esteemed it, shall wander from sea to sea, and from the north even to the east; they shall run to and fro to seek the Word of the Lord and shall not find it.  A famine is in the land for hearing the Word. (Manuscript 1, June 1857)

HE LAYS DOWN HIS PRIESTLY ROBE

Another angel came out of the temple, crying with a loud voice to Him who sat on the cloud, "Thrust in Your sickle and reap, for the time has come for You to reap, for the harvest of the earth is ripe." So He who sat on the cloud thrust in His sickle on the earth, and the earth was reaped.--Revelation 14:15-16

Then I saw Jesus lay off His priestly attire and clothe Himself with His most kingly robes.  Upon His head were many crowns, a crown within a crown.  Surrounded by the angelic host, He left heaven.  The plagues were falling upon the inhabitants of the earth.  Some were denouncing God and cursing Him.  Others rushed to the people of God and begged to be taught how they might escape His judgments.  But the saints had nothing for them.

The last tear for sinners had been shed, the last agonizing prayer offered, the last burden borne, the last warning given.  The sweet voice of mercy was no more to invite them.

When the saints, and all heaven, were interested for their salvation, they had no interest for themselves.  Life and death had been set before them.  Many desired life, but made no effort to obtain it.  They did not choose life, and now there was no atoning blood to cleanse the guilty, no compassionate Saviour to plead for them, and cry, "Spare, spare the sinner a little longer."  All heaven had united with Jesus, as they heard the fearful words, "It is done.  It is finished."  The plan of salvation had been accomplished, but few had chosen to accept it.  And as mercy's sweet voice died away, fear and horror seized the wicked.  With terrible distinctness they heard the words, "Too late! too late!" (Early Writings, 281)

REFLECTION:  This, will take place, until Jesus has finished his priestly office in the Heavenly Sanctuary, and lays off his priestly attire, and puts on his most kingly robes, and crown, to ride forth on the cloudy chariot, to "thresh the heathen in anger," and deliver his people.

Then Jesus will have the sharp sickle in his hand, (Revelation 14:14) and then the saints will cry day and night to Jesus on the cloud, to thrust in his sharp sickle and reap. (A Word to the Little Flock, 12)
