The dark shadow of sin has then forever vanished. The wicked, root and branch (Mal. 4:1), are destroyed out of the land of the living, and the universal anthem of praise and thanksgiving (Rev. 5:13) goes up from the redeemed world and a clean universe to a covenant-keeping God" (Uriah Smith, Daniel and the Revelation, p. 759). Then may this sublime be uttered, "It is done."
Georgia Harkness, writing of her undergraduate days at Cornell University, says that one of her deepest impressions was the inscription over the entrance to the main hall of the College of Arts and Sciences, "Above all nations is humanity." But to this conviction, which is accepted by an increasing number of thoughtful people today, there must be added another, "Above all humanity is God."
The plan of God will at last be accomplished. He who Himself is the whole alphabet of existence, the Alpha and Omega, the A and the Z, will bring it to pass. There in that city "never built with hands nor hoary with the years of time," the pilgrims of earth will see Him whom having not seen they loved (1 Peter 1:8). And when the glorious New Jerusalem comes down from God out of heaven we shall indeed have heaven on earth, and God Himself shall dwell with us and be our God (Rev. 21:3) Here the river of life will flow forever from the throne of God.
By faith we may drink of the water of life now. As Jesus said to the woman at the well: "Whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life" (John 4:14). Let us ask of Him that we may drink now, freely, for it is the gift of God.
MEDITATION PRAYER: "As the hart panteth after the water brooks, so panteth my soul after thee, O God" (Ps. 42:1).
